Cleansing your face twice a day — once in the morning and once in the evening — is the general rule of thumb here. According to Shokeen, cleansing in the morning can help to remove any sweat or oil left on your pillow and hair during your beauty sleep.
Evening cleansing, on the other hand, should never be compromised or omitted. “It’s vital to wash at the end of the day to remove not only the skin-care products and cosmetics you used earlier in the day, but also excess oil, sweat, dead skin cells, pollutants, and other debris that accumulate on the skin during the day,” Shah notes.
Experts advise novices to choose a soft, hydrating cleanser when selecting a facial cleanser. “A moisturizing cleanser may be used on any skin type,” says Farber. Look for one that is fragrance-free, has few chemicals (to reduce irritation), and has ceramides and glycerin to restore and maintain the skin barrier, according to her.

Step 2: Moisturize your skin
After that, apply a moisturizer or a moisturizing cream to your skin. “I usually recommend an oil-free, fragrance-free moisturizer,” adds Farber, “since it will be well accepted by [all] skin types, from acne-prone to sensitive.”
Beyond these boundaries, you can use this step to treat specific skin conditions at the same time by looking for a moisturizer that contains extra compounds that address specific needs. The list of skin-care ingredients is long and ever-changing, so for the purposes of this article, here are some of the most important ones to be aware of in terms of moisturizer:
Hyaluronic acid moisturizes and hydrates the skin.
Ceramides are essential for the strength of the skin’s barrier and overall health (and important for those with dry skin and eczema).
Vitamin C protects against free radicals and brightens the skin.

If you have oily or acne-prone skin, don’t believe you can (or should) go without using a moisturizer on a daily basis. “Over-washing without the proper usage of a moisturizer will actually cause your skin to produce too much oil,” Shokeen warns.

“No matter how oily or acne-prone your skin is, it will dry up without replenishment, and dried-out skin is irritable skin,” says Farber.
Those with oily skin, on the other hand, should look for noncomedogenic moisturizers. According to Shokeen, the phrase “noncomedogenic” on a product label signifies that the components will not clog pores and create further breakouts. Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel Moisturizer and EltaMD AM Therapy Facial Moisturizer are two of her favorite noncomedogenic moisturizers for oily skin.
“Your first line of defense and protection against skin cancer is sunscreen,” says Farber. “Sun protection is the most critical thing you can do for your skin if you don’t do anything else.”
Choose a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and use it every day (even when it’s cloudy) as the last step in your skin-care routine. EltaMD UV Active Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen 50+, Supergoop Glowscreen SPF 40, and Coppertone Pure & Simple Sunscreen Lotion for Face SPF 50, which is created specifically for sensitive skin, are three excellent choices.

There are two options when it comes to selecting the sort of sunscreen to use: Mineral-based or chemical-based (in some cases, both are combined into one formula). Mineral sunscreens, which contain chemicals like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, act as a shield, preventing the sun’s rays from reaching the skin. Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, work by absorbing UV radiation and using chemicals like octocrylene or avobenzone to do so.
As needed, add additional steps (or wanted)
Once you’ve got a basic pattern established, you may start adding in other stages as needed. Exfoliation, which can be done once or twice a week with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) that function in different ways to slough off excess accumulation on the skin’s surface, is an excellent place to start.
Physical and chemical exfoliation are the two types of exfoliation available, just as there are two types of sunscreen. Chemical exfoliants like AHAs and BHAs are good for promoting cell turnover, enhancing collagen synthesis, and reducing dullness, according to Shokeen. Physical exfoliation, on the other hand, is using a face scrub to manually slough away dead skin cells, excess oil, and buildup. Physical exfoliants should be avoided by sensitive skin types, according to Shokeen, because they might irritate the skin and cause burst blood vessels.
Serums and masks are two additional add-on phases that you can rotate in and out of your routine as needed. Facial serums are high-potency, lightweight topicals with a higher concentration of active ingredients — such as vitamin C and hyaluronic acid — to address more specific skin issues. They should be used on top of your moisturizer; as a general rule, put items with a thinner consistency underneath thicker ones, such as moisturizers and oils.
You can also use a facial mask now and then, though Shokeen recommends only doing so once or twice a week. “Face masks should be used on clean, dry skin on a regular basis,” she says. Look for a face mask that’s designed to address whatever skin issues you’re having that day; examples include moisturizing, clarifying, relaxing, and brightening masks.
Keep these helpful hints in mind.
Perhaps the most crucial piece of advice to remember as your skin-care routine develops and evolves is this: Less is often more. “Doing less and adhering to crucial, important active elements will serve you much better than doing too much,” says Farber. “Stick to products with few ingredients and no fragrances, and experiment with different items one at a time to observe how your skin reacts.”
If a new skin-care routine doesn’t seem to be “working” right away, remember that patience is required when it comes to skincare (and if any product promises immediate results, be weary). “Don’t try too many new things,” Shokeen advises. “Give your skin at least two to three months to get acclimated to a product or active ingredient before switching.” The only exception is if a skin-care product causes irritation or an allergic response, in which case you should stop using it immediately.
Consistency is essential.
“Stay consistent,” Shah advises, referring to the patience element. Consistency, as with many things in life, is vital to achieving and sustaining actual results. This means following the same skin-care regimen steps every day, morning and night. Bottom line: Have faith in the process (and in yourself) and stick to any goals you establish for yourself.
