Hope Gillerman, an essential oil formulator and aromatherapist, explains. “A botanical oil, or what aromatherapists call a ‘carrier oil,’ is the most versatile suspension of essential oils,” she says.
“Essential oil mixes diluted in carrier oils are excellent for massage, hydrotherapy (baths), and skincare on the face, body, hair, feet, and nail bed.”

What Is Carrier Oil and What Does It Do?

Carrier oils are plant oils like avocado or coconut that are used to transport essential oils. They aid in the diluting of essential oils’ extremely concentrated nature, reducing skin irritation.
Carrier oils are a go-to ingredient because of their natural composition. They can be used on their own or as a base in many common skincare products. “Carrier oils are a fully active ingredient that may be used in serums, face oils, nurturing masks, cleansers, scrubs, creams, lotions, and balms,” Gillerman explains. “Oils that are unrefined, unbleached, and unfiltered and are expressed with low heat preserve more of the oil’s constituents.” Rosehip, jojoba, vitamin E, sunflower, and coconut are all common carrier oils.

“They are high in vital fatty acids and vitamins, which support skin health and healing,” says Gillerman.

How to Pick the Right Carrier Oil for Your Skin
It’s crucial to consider your skin type when selecting a carrier oil to use on its own or as a basis for an essential oil combination. “All oils are not made equal,” Idriss says. “Some are heavier and tend to be occlusive, while others are lighter and more volatile.” For example, if you create a lot of oils, I’d recommend using a light carrier oil like jojoba oil. Avocado oil is more occlusive in nature and is filled with fatty acids if you have a dry skin.”

Look for a carrier oil with a high oleic content, which means it “provides quick, deep absorption without leaving you feeling oily and penetrates into the deeper layers of the skin,” according to Gillerman. Look for carrier oils that are high in nutrients like vital fatty acids like linoleic acid and punicic acid, as well as palmitoleic acid and vitamins A, K, D, C, and E, she adds. These acids are recognized for giving skin luminosity and a natural glow by assisting the skin in retaining moisture.

It’s not exactly an oil, but rather a liquid wax ester, according to her. “It delivers high levels of antioxidants, vital fatty acids, and vitamin E and is soothing, penetrating, and hydrating for all skin types.” It can also be used to balance oily skin and treat breakouts: “Jojoba oil can help with mild acne because of its anti-inflammatory characteristics,” adds Idriss.

Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant.

How to Keep Things Safe

“The shelf life of most oils is two years,” says Gillerman. “Choose oils with a long shelf life, such as jojoba, to avoid oxidation and potential discomfort.” When buying something, always verify the expiration date (online sellers will provide this information).

Refrigerate or store all carrier oils in a cool, dark place. It’s worth noting that if you refrigerate your oil, you’ll need to bring it back to a liquid form before using it. Never heat oil directly because this can cause it to lose its integrity. Allow to cool to room temperature before using.

How to Combine Essential Oils with Carrier Oils

You can mix and match carrier oils to make a base that suits your needs and aspirations. When combining an essential oil or essential oil blend into a carrier oil base for the face, Gillerman recommends diluting the essential oil at 1% in the carrier oil or carrier oil blend. For external usage, you can dilute essential oils up to 5%.

Research essential oils to create a skincare formulation that is tailored to your specific needs, and keep in mind that essential oils are extremely potent.
