When your natural oil production is excessive, your skin becomes greasy. Your skin could be oily for a variety of reasons:

Hormone abnormalities can play a significant role in excessive oil production.
Chemicals: Some harsh components in skincare products can overwork your oil glands.
Genetics: You may have been born with oily skin.
Weather: Humidity and summer sun might play a role, which is the last thing you want while on vacation.

To eliminate extra oils and prevent pore blockage, cleanse your skin twice a day, in the morning and at night, with a light water-soluble face cleanser.

As previously said, stay away from aggravating substances, as well as abrasive scrubs and cleansing instruments.

Remember that tingling does not mean cleaner skin; it is an indication of irritation, which is bad for all skin types.

A well-formulated, alcohol-free exfoliating toner will rejuvenate your skin with antioxidants and calming elements, lessen the appearance of enlarged pores, and remove any makeup or dirt residues that could clog the pores.

Exfoliating toners with BHAs, such as salicylic acid, are ideal for oily skin types since they are oil soluble and may penetrate deep into the pores, unclogging them from the roots and preventing black and whiteheads.

Apply a moisturizer

Oily skin types, contrary to popular perception, require adequate hydration to keep the dermis functioning and appearing healthy.

To keep the skin operating and regenerating at its best, it needs to be properly hydrated.

Check out our first Back to Basics skincare installment to discover more about the differences between dehydrated and dry skin.

When selecting a moisturizer, look for an oil-free, water-based composition that will properly hydrate your skin without blocking pores or leaving it feeling heavy and greasy.

SPF (Sun Protection Factor)

There are so many stylish and sophisticated oil-free and non-comedogenic sunblock formulas available nowadays.

The Gaggle loves lotions with the active components zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide, which have been shown to help prevent acne breakouts.

Furthermore, effective sun protection aids in the prevention of pigmentation scarring.

Our top picks are:

Shiseido ultimate sun protection SPF 50 sunscreen + a wet force for sensitive skin + children Shiseido ultimate sun protection SPF 50 sunscreen + a wet force for sensitive skin + children

Treatments and serums that are specific to you

If you have acne-prone skin and are prone to breakouts, you should add a treatment serum with benzoyl peroxide to help control oil production during the day while lowering redness and inflammation, as well as a retinol serum to keep the face clear and rejuvenated at night.

Niacinamide, a potent antioxidant that helps with the appearance of enlarged pores while also soothing and calming the skin and giving anti-aging benefits, is another fantastic ingredient to include in your routine.

We understand how tough it may be to maintain and manage oily skin. Those who suffer from acne breakouts on a regular basis face an even greater issue.

Although we can’t make them go away overnight, we can reduce their appearance and make your skin less reactive with a simple and efficient regimen.

To reach such goals, we must dispel some common misconceptions about excess oil production and breakouts.

Genetically, oily or mixed skin types are prone. This is the skin type you were born with, not a condition that can be treated or cured.

Oily skin develops when the sebaceous glands in the dermis produce too much sebum, resulting in a greasy appearance. Excess oils are produced as a result of this hyperactivity, which overfills and widens the pores. Dirt and germs combine with sebum in the pores.

Skin cells become stuck beneath the skin’s surface, forming blackheads and whiteheads. Acne, which includes blackheads and whiteheads, is a different sort of skin disorder.

The best strategy to deal with oily skin and reduce acne is to stick to a routine that helps to balance out the skin’s oil production while keeping it moisturized and avoiding any disruptions to the dermis barrier.

Avoid harsh or drying products like alcohol and other astringents, as well as irritating ingredients like menthol, lemon, and eucalyptus, as well as aromatic oils and solid rich formulations like bar soaps, which clog the pores and exacerbate oil secretion on the skin.

It doesn’t happen very often. Washing your face too often might lead to an increase in oil production, so try to limit it to the morning, night, and after a workout.
Make use of a gentle cleanser.

Avoid using harsh soaps or soaps that include a lot of detergents, as they might irritate your skin and make it dry.

Choose a gentle cleanser that will remove dirt and oil from your face without drying it out.

Use lukewarm water to clean.

Because hot water can be drying, the AADA recommends washing your face with lukewarm water.
Don’t scrub anything. Scrubbing your face vigorously is not the way to go. Scrubbing might irritate your skin, so gently cleanse it with your fingertips before patting it dry.

Step two: Get Your Skin Toned

It only takes a few swipes of a decent toner to make a huge difference. After cleansing, a toner can help regulate your skin’s pH levels while also protecting the acid mantle.

Not only does the use of cleansers and cosmetics have a significant impact on the skin’s pH, but studies have also shown that using normal tap water with a pH of roughly 8 can raise the pH level of the skin for up to six hours after application.

In general, the pH of healthy skin in women is between 4.5 and 5.5.

As the pH of the skin rises, the population and activity of acne-causing bacteria increases, but the antimicrobial peptide effect decreases.

Using a pH rebalancing toner as part of your skincare routine can help restore the skin’s natural pH balance while also protecting it from acne-causing bacteria.

Use Treatments If Necessary Acne and greasy skin are frequently associated.

If you’re dealing with breakouts and excess oil, you’ll need a treatment that will address both issues at the same time.

Our Acne Cream is prescription-strength and created for your unique skin troubles, with a personalized blend of potent chemicals such as tretinoin, clindamycin, azelaic acid, zinc pyrithione, and niacinamide.

Moisturize your skin

While it’s true that moisturizing your face might make it more oily, it’s also true that it can help you retain a clear and balanced complexion.

When your skin becomes too dry, your body may attempt to compensate by creating more oil.

Dryness can be caused by several of the products we’ve discussed. These are some of them:

Salicylic acid Retinoids Benzoyl peroxide (adapalene, tazarotene, and tretinoin)
When choosing a facial moisturizer, look for one that is suitable for oily skin.

On the label, products for oily skin will say “oil-free,” “non-comedogenic,” or “won’t clog pores.”

Do you wash your face only once or twice a day, if at all? Cleaning your skin on a regular basis is crucial, especially if your skin is naturally oily, as it aids in the removal of excess oil and grime.

If you don’t cleanse on a regular basis, your pores will become clogged faster and you’ll have more outbreaks.

Because oily skin is more prone to acne, it is necessary to cleanse it on a regular basis.

Worn-out skin cells are removed from your face and excess oil is wiped away when you use the Obagi CLENZIderm Daily Care Foaming Cleanser in the morning and evening, which can help prevent spots and skin imperfections.

Exfoliating the skin removes dead skin cells and encourages cell turnover, resulting in new, brighter, and more radiant skin.

It’s critical to choose an exfoliant that suits your skin type if you have oily skin. For those with oily skin, the Obagi Nu-Derm Fx Exfoderm Forte is a must-have.

This is an exfoliator that has been designed specifically for Normal to Oily skin types. Obagi Nu-Derm Fx® Exfoderm Forte uses the alpha-hydroxy acids Glycolic Acid and Lactic Acid to help reduce dark spots, sun spots, and other symptoms of skin aging. To obtain the best results, use this two to three times a week for oily skin.

Your skin will be more prone to acne and outbreaks if it is greasy. As a result, your skincare routine should be tailored to your skin type.

If you have oily skin, look for skincare that has active ingredients like salicylic acid, which is great for unclogging blocked pores and reducing blemishes.

The 2 percent Salicylic Acid in the Obagi CLENZIderm Daily Care Foaming Cleanser dissolves dead skin cells and improves the absorption and penetration of the following important components.

Face masks are great for oily skin since they moisturize the skin while also balancing the oils. Applying a face mask once a week will help to balance out the oils in your skin, making it appear less oily.

Furthermore, putting on a face mask always makes us feel more relaxed, so why not devote a full evening to self-care?

Microdermabrasion Polish + Mask is a great at-home facial treatment that contains 30% Vitamin C for quick skin radiance!

Excessive makeup use on a regular basis contributes to pore blockage and the accumulation of excess oil on the face. Instead of applying a full coat of foundation, use a concealer to cover any areas where you need more coverage.

Allow your skin to breathe as much as possible by cleaning your face and removing any residual makeup from the day. One extremely important rule: before going to bed, always remove your makeup.

Even if it’s the morning after a night out KEEP YOUR SKIN HYDRATED

Even if your initial impulse is to eliminate moisturizer from your daily skincare routine, oily skin still requires hydration. In fact, if you don’t apply a moisturizer, your skin will produce extra oil to compensate.

Choose a mild moisturizer that won’t clog your pores, such as Obagi Hydrate or New Obagi Daily Hydro-DropsTM, to help regulate oil production. For oily skin, moisturizers with a higher water content are recommended.

Last but not least, it is critical to consume at least five to six glasses of water each day. Water is not only nutritious and necessary, but it also aids in the removal of toxins from the body and the reduction of the greasy appearance of oily skin.

People with oily skin can lower the amount of moisture on their skin in a simple, natural, and cost-free approach.

Cleaning your face on a daily basis is a simple approach to keep oily skin under control. Face washing should be done twice a day, in the morning and at night.

Over cream-based or lotion-based cleansers, use a foamy soap or face cleanser. Foaming cleansers are far more effective at removing excess oil and leaving your skin feeling fresh and clean.

After you sweat, such as after a gym class or a workout, you should cleanse your face (and body, if you have body breakouts).

Sweat can exacerbate breakouts and cause acne mechanica, which is a kind of acne.

If you don’t have access to soap and water right away, bring a stockpile of pre-moistened cleansing wipes in your backpack to wipe off your skin.

There are numerous facial washing clothes available, but fragrance-free baby wipes will suffice.

But be wary of over-cleansing. Excessive cleansing of the face might irritate the skin. And, while acne isn’t caused by oily or dirty skin, simply washing your face more regularly won’t help you get rid of pimples.

Make use of astringent

Another helpful technique to control oil is to use an astringent. Astringents are similar to toners, however, they are designed specifically for oily skin.

Astringents aid in the removal of excess oil from the skin as well as the tightening of pores (temporarily, at least).

To use, saturate a cotton ball or cotton pad with the product and wipe it over your entire face and neck.

After cleansing, but before applying for a moisturizer or acne medicine, do this.

Astringents are also useful for cleaning away excess oil and removing oily gloss that accumulates during the day in between washings.

Some astringents contain chemicals that can help clear acne, like glycolic acid or salicylic acid.

However, you do not require a high-end brand. Witch hazel is an inexpensive and effective way to eliminate excess oil (about a dollar for 16 ounces).

Use water-based and oil-free products.

You obviously don’t want to add any more oil to your skin than it already has. Look for the words “oil-free” on the label of any leave-on products, such as moisturizers, sunscreen, and cosmetics.

You may also wish to utilize non-comedogenic goods.

This implies they’re less prone to clog pores (comedones) and produce acne breakouts.

Water-based products are also a good choice for oily skin. Water-based cosmetics have a gel foundation and leave no greasy trace on the skin. On the skin, they are almost weightless.

Water-based moisturizing gels, sunscreens, and cosmetics foundations are all available. Look at the label; many of these are geared toward people who have oily or acne-prone skin.

There are other water-based acne medicines available. Differin, Retin-A, Onexon, and other products are available in gel form.

If your current acne treatment is too thick or greasy for you, ask your dermatologist if a gel version is available.

You Shouldn’t Scrub Your Skin

Scrubbing seems to be especially ingrained in those of us with oily skin, and it can be difficult to break. After all, won’t scrubbing the skin deep clean pores, remove acne, and reduce oiliness?

Surprisingly, the answer is no. Using abrasive scrubs, pads, or washcloths on your skin will not make it less oily or improve acne. However, it will irritate the skin. Whether your skin is oily or not, be gentle with it.

Use Acne Treatments and Exfoliate

Acne treatments and exfoliating creams can help remove excess oil and lessen the appearance of big pores. Large pores and oily skin typically go hand in hand, and they can be just as aggravating as acne. While you won’t be able to permanently reduce the size of your pores, you can make them appear smaller.

Many acne treatments serve double duty by reducing pore size while also eliminating outbreaks. Retinoids, especially topical retinoids, are effective at shrinking big pores. Another option is salicylic acid, which is available over-the-counter. 1

Exfoliating products are the way to go if you don’t have a lot of acne but want to minimize the appearance of your large pores. Glycolic acid and other alpha hydroxy acids keep pores clean of dirt, making them appear smaller.

To combat dark circles, I use ice compresses under my eyes and a jade face massage roller. I aim to get 6-8 hours of sleep every night, but it isn’t always possible. Before you go into the shower, keep a spoon in the fridge. Other methods exist, but I find this one to be the simplest and most convenient for me when I’m short on time. That day, I also increased my water consumption.

That’s all there is to it – three simple steps. And knowing that I am still taking care of myself even when I am busy helps me feel good about myself. SheaMoisture products are a favorite of mine to utilize in my skincare routine because they are made with natural and certified organic ingredients and they perform. On my daughter’s hair, I also use the 100 percent Virgin Coconut Oil Daily Hydration Shampoo and Conditioner.

Wear sunscreen at all times.

Skin is damaged by UV rays all year, not just in the summer. You’ve probably heard it a million times, but it’s true: SPF is essential for your skincare routine. You must use a genuine sunscreen product, not a moisturizer with SPF or makeup with SPF.

“Sun exposure causes 90% of skin aging,” says Alex Serron, a skin therapist at Heyday. “SPF (between SPF 30 and SPF 50) is the best anti-aging product money can buy.” “It must be worn every day, regardless of the season or whether you will be inside. Remember that ultraviolet A (UVA) rays, which promote skin aging, can pass through windows.”

Dr. Shereene Idriss, a dermatologist at Union Square Dermatology, knows how perplexing the beauty industry can be. “A profusion of skincare products can be overwhelming, but remember that the essentials are the most important when it comes to excellent skin, such as a powerful sunscreen with at least SPF 30. If you think the SPF 15 in your foundation is enough, you’re delusory “According to Dr. Idriss.
Only exfoliate once in a while, not every day.
Leftover filth and grime can accumulate on your skin over time. Exfoliating your skin removes dead skin that causes irritation, dullness, and acne. While exfoliating should not be done every day, it should be done a few times a week as part of your skincare program.

“Once you’re comfortable with your basic skin routine, I’d recommend using a chemical exfoliant a few times a week to speed up the removal of superficial dead skin cells, allowing the active ingredients in your skincare products to penetrate better, resulting in healthier, smoother-looking skin,” Dr. Idriss says.

The Dermalogica Skin Prep Scrub ($37; removes dead and dull skin cells, revealing bright, dewy skin. Use it a couple of times a week to keep the buildup at bay.

Use an Anti-Aging Supplement

The first three actions must be included here in order to build and maintain healthy skin. Include an anti-aging product in even the most basic skincare routine to help reduce wear and tear caused by environmental aggressors.

“Retinol (a less effective, over-the-counter version of a retinoid) is a star component because it’s one of the few chemicals that can go deep into your dermis and promote collagen creation straight at the source,” explains Dr. Idriss. “It’s been scientifically proven to help balance out texture, fine lines, wrinkles, and even pore size over time,” says the author.

If your skin’s anti-aging is a top goal, consider adding a retinol product to your routine. The dr. Brandt 2 percent Retinol Complex Serum ($69, is one of our favorites.

Don’t Overthink

Skincare is intended to be enjoyable, so don’t let all the beauty hype stress you out. The fundamentals of healthy skincare haven’t changed. Plus, once you’ve established a schedule that works for you, you can always add something new.

What’s a good method to get started? Dr. Rogers advises, “Focus on selecting a face wash you like and using it every night.” “This is the most crucial stage because it helps you establish an evening self-care ritual that will allow you to do more for your skin when you’re ready.”

Zinc oxide particles are used in the Supergoop Skin Soothing Mineral Sunscreen SPF 40 ($28, and Neutrogena Sheer Zinc Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50 ($11, to help bounce the sun’s rays off the skin and are less prone to break down on the skin or in the container.
