‘Sebum is the oil produced by our skin. The sebaceous gland in the hair follicle produces it,’ says Andrea Pfeffer, inventor of Pfeffer Sal. ‘The skin of our face contains more hair follicles per cm2 than the rest of our body, which is why oiliness is concentrated on the face. ‘The basic role of sebum is to lubricate the skin, limit bacteria growth, and prevent dryness and dehydration,’ says Pfeffer. A twice-daily exfoliation swiped over the face after cleansing is the ideal method to include salicylic acid into your routine. Just don’t make the mistake of rinsing it off: it won’t get rid of any greasiness nearly as well. Instead, if you’re using a salicylic acid cleanser, let it sit for two minutes before washing it off (a great opportunity for a little facial massage).
5. Take Care of Your Diet
Evans believes that the source of your oily skin problems could be in your intestines. ‘If you have oily skin, stay away from sweets and dairy since they feed and enhance oil production,’ she says. ‘Moreover, a diet lacking in zinc, magnesium, vitamin B, and omega 3 fatty acids may contribute to the formation of oil.’ Pfeffer agrees, proposing that we eat more zinc-rich foods in particular. ‘Zinc aids in the regulation of oil-producing glands, allowing them to function more effectively! Shellfish, legumes, and nuts are excellent sources.’ It’s also important to think about how much sugar you consume. ‘A high sugar intake can also boost oil production,’ argues Pfeffer, because insulin produces the hormone IGF-1, which can enhance sebum production.

8. Make an informed decision about your foundation.
Don’t limit yourself to long-wear liquid foundations if you have oily skin. Mineral powders have a lot of advantages: they’re mostly non-comedogenic (which means they won’t clog your pores), they’re extremely oil-absorbing, and they can easily be layered up throughout the day.
