Why do razor bumps occur?

According to Dr. Shamban, hair removal, friction, irritation, and associated inflammation are the usual causes of razor burn or razor bumps. She points out that there are several direct causes, including friction at the skin’s surface, the pull of growing hair at the skin, and occasionally even bacteria and fungus. According to her, persons with thick, curly hair may experience more skin irritability than those without.

If you take good care of them, these bumps should fade away in a few days, according to Dr. Shamban. Ingrown hairs under the skin may be the source of more severe skin irritation that doesn’t appear to go away. According to Dr. Shamban, they are brought on when hair grows in rather than out of the skin. They “may produce pimples on the skin that are firm, elevated, and more pimple-like.”

You can address the inflammation that has already happened in a few different ways. Priorities first When treating ingrown hair, you should “immediately halt all hair removal from the region,” advises Dr. Shamban. When necessary, ice can also aid with pain and inflammation. She claims that ingrown hairs and even razor burn frequently go away on their own. Therefore, other than moderate exfoliation, you won’t need to “cure” ingrown hairs. This is especially true when the skin is soft and warm after a bath or shower or by using warm compresses on the area.

She adds that it may be possible for the hair to reach the surface by “gently exfoliating the top layers and sloughing off any dead skin cells and any build-up hiding the follicle.” Use a glycolic acid toner as part of your skincare regimen to help remove dead skin cells gently. According to Dr. Shamban, ingredients like salicylic acid, a BHA, or lactic acid can also be helpful. To cure irritation, itchiness, or burning, as well as to battle inflammation or relax the skin, she continues, “Coconut oil, aloe vera, apple cider vinegar, tea tree oil, or witch hazel are all fantastic pantry staples.”

1. Always exfoliate, always exfoliate

According to Petrosian, exfoliation is crucial because it removes the dead skin cells that could obstruct the hair follicle.
