Keep on top of your cleansing

According to Dr Yannis Alexandrides, founder and surgical director of 111 Harley St, maintaining a healthy washing routine – morning and night – is critical to keeping acne at bay. “The amount of cleanser you use is important,” he continues. “Make sure it’s the size of a water bottle lid – any less can cause breakouts because dirt and makeup debris may still be clogging pores.”

When it comes to what ingredients to look for in a cleanser, consultant dermatologist Dr Anjali Mahto prefers salicylic acid, and it’s easy to understand why. Stop picking your face

Don’t disregard retinol

Retinol is well-known for its anti-aging properties, but its resurfacing properties can also aid with acne control and scar repair. “Vitamin A in mild doses dries out sebum production,” explains Shabir Daya, co-founder of Victoria Health. “With less sebum in the pores, the chances of them becoming clogged are reduced, ultimately decreasing the likelihood of acne breakouts.” In terms of acne scarring, retinol promotes cell renewal and collagen formation.

However, there are a few caveats. When using retinol, avoid utilizing acids such as AHAs and BHAs, as the combination can cause severe flare-ups. Remember that if you’re using retinol for the first time, you should incorporate it into your skincare routine gradually (preferably once a week).

Try a professional treatment

If your active acne has cleared and scarring is your main concern, both Julie and Dr Alexandrides recommend trying an in-clinic treatment. “The most effective way to get rid of acne scars is through a treatment performed in a clinical setting, such as microdermabrasion, laser resurfacing or a peel,” says Julie.

Microneedling is another approach, in which small needles induce a controlled micro-injury on the skin’s surface to encourage collagen formation. This non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure “boosts the skin’s natural repair system without having to remove the top layer of skin,” according to Dr. Alexandrides. “When combined with laser treatment (depending on the patient’s skin type), this is an excellent way to treat acne scarring.” Scarred skin can be delicate, so see a skin specialist before deciding on a therapy.

Eat for your skin

Diet plays a big part in the health of your skin and one of the best things you can do to help clear both acne and acne scarring, is to pay attention to what you’re eating and drinking.

Sweets, and carbohydrates should all be consumed in moderation, whereas seasonal fruits, vegetables, and water are all excellent choices for draining toxins from your skin. Gluten, in particular, can aggravate acne-prone skin. “Gluten contains a protein that frequently causes ‘leaky gut syndrome,’ in which food proteins enter the circulatory system and cause an inflammatory response and hyperpigmentation,” Dr Alexandrides adds. If you suspect that gluten in your diet is causing skin problems, try replacing it with uncooked fish, “zoodles” (zucchini noodles), or chickpea-based pasta.

 

Use non-comedogenic makeup

Finally, some of your everyday products could be exacerbating your acne and scarring – so to be on the safe side try switching to non-comedogenic or mineral makeup. “Makeup products that include parabens and artificial oils in their ingredient list can sometimes worsen your skin if not properly removed at night,” says Dr Alexandrides.
