1. SEEK SHADE.
Avoid over exposure to the sun, especially between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, when the sun is strongest and UV risk is at its highest.
2. DO NOT BURN.
Every sunburn increases the chance of getting skin cancer.
3. AVOID TANNING AND UV TANNING BOOTHS.

4. USE SUNSCREEN.
Use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. Apply one ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside.

11. Use Sunscreen
Your skin is exposed to the sun every day, so sunscreen isn’t just for the beach. Use a daily broad-spectrum—blocking UVA and UVB rays—sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher on all exposed areas. And choose cosmetics and lip balms with SPF. For beach days, use water-resistant sunscreens with higher SPFs. Remember to apply sunscreen liberally 30 minutes before sun exposure, reapply every few hours and even more frequently after swimming or sweating, and check the expiration date.

12. Seek Shade
The sun’s rays are strongest between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.—when your shadow is shorter than you. Try to schedule outdoor activities in the hours before or after this time. If you must be in the sun during these hours, seek shade—trees, umbrellas and shelters—as often as possible. If you rely on an umbrella for shade at the beach, find one with a UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) of 30 or more.
13. Cover Up
In the water, consider wearing a rash guard instead of a t-shirt. Wet t-shirts offer far less UV protection than dry ones. Rash guards are made of polyester and a stretchy material, and many have a built-in UPF. If you aren’t in the water, cover up with loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and long pants. Tightly woven materials in dark colors provide more protection than loosely woven materials or lighter colors. And check clothing labels for UPF information. You want materials with a UPF of at least 30.
14. Wear Hats
The face, ears, scalp and neck are common areas to find skin cancer. Give these areas extra protection with a wide-brimmed hat. Look for a brim that is three inches or more all the way around. Or choose a shade cap with fabric in the back to cover your ears and neck. Like clothing, tightly woven materials in dark colors provide greater protection. If you can see through the weave, the UV rays can get through it.
15. Sport Sunglasses
Cataracts and the sensitive skin around your eyes can both be harmed by exposure to the sun. Wearing sunglasses will protect both your skin and your vision. Darker doesn’t always imply better protection for eyewear. Dark colors do not filter UV rays; they merely lessen the intensity of non-toxic visible light. The best protection comes from glasses with larger frames or wraparound lenses. Moreover, seek for labels that include UVA and UVB coverage or that conform to ANSI (American National Standards Institute) standards. Never assume anything about sunglasses that aren’t marked.
16. Heed the Daily UV Index
The daily UV index is a consistent part of your local weather prediction. The index gives an estimate of the risk of excessive sun exposure on a scale from one to eleven plus. A higher number indicates a greater risk. A UV alert means that the UV index for your region is expected to be six or higher, which is high and particularly severe for the time of year. Use extra caution or choose indoor activities if there is a UV alert where you are.
17. Be Cautious About Reflection
Certain surfaces reflect the light, increasing your UV exposure. Think about reflection whenever you are near water, sand, or snow. It significantly raises your risk of getting sunburned. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen liberally to your lips and any other exposed skin.
18. Check Medications
Certain medications increase the sensitivity of your skin to the sun. Examples include certain antibiotics, diuretics, antidepressants, cholesterol-lowering meds, acne therapies, high blood pressure medications, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). If you take prescription or over-the-counter medications, talk to your pharmacist about your sun exposure to find out if they increase your risk of being burnt.
19. Seek Other Sources of Vitamin D
Strong bones and good health both depend on vitamin D. When your skin is exposed to the sun, it produces vitamin D. Nevertheless, vitamin D is not just found in the sun. Moreover, it is naturally present in fortified foods such milk, cereal, yogurt, and orange juice as well as fatty seafood like tuna, swordfish, and salmon. Before using a vitamin D supplement, see your doctor because too much might be hazardous.
20. Avoid Indoor Tanning
No tan is ever safe. Sunlamps and tanning beds expose you to UVA and UVB radiation, which harm your skin. Skin cancer is another consequence. You may protect your skin by never tanning inside. If you want to seem tanned, choose sunless tanning creams instead.
